Favorite Fall Events Just Around the Corner

It’s after Labor Day and summer is coming to a close despite what the weather thinks. Here at Shaddock Homes, we’re sad to say goodbye to summer fun, but we’re excited for all the fall events coming up. Of course, we’re the MOST excited for one of the biggest events of the year… The Texas State Fair.

Every year the state fair comes to bring joy, junk food, and endless entertainment and the lineup this year won’t disappoint. And the fair is a short drive from all of our Shaddock Homes communities! So, there’s no reason to miss out! Dates for this year’s fair run from September 28th – October 21st.

The theme for this year’s 132nd state fair is “Celebrating Texas Innovation.” The theme was chosen to highlight all of the marvelous creations that were created in Texas but cherished by the world. Some of the inspiration for the theme comes from America’s first self-contained modern shopping center, iconic corn chips, and even corny dogs! The theme follows last year’s theme of “Celebrating Texans” and we know we’ll be there to celebrate.

One way to celebrate is by checking out the music at the fair. The entertainment lineup for this year is so diverse that there’s surely something for everyone! Concerts take place each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the duration of the fair and are free to attend once you’re inside the gates. Go here for more info or see the list below.

  • 20 at 8:30 p.m.: Casting Crowns
  • 21 at 3 p.m.: Banda Carnaval

While the entertainment is a huge perk to the Texas State Fair, we’re partial to trying all the food! It’s of course true to the theme and is full of innovative food left and right. Some of the winners of the 2018 Big Tex Choice Award are the Cotton Candy Taco, Deep Fried Shepard’s pie, Texas Twang-Kie and Deep-Fried Skillet Potato Melt in a Boat. Then there’s always the Thursday food specials where you can get a deal on classics like corny dogs and funnel cakes! To find out more about the food at this year’s fair go here.

Food and concerts may be big staples to your Texas State Fair experience, the fun doesn’t end there. Spend some of your visit in The Barns. Each year more than 5,200 students participate in youth events and leadership contests associated with livestock and agriculture heritage. And there’s plenty of cute animals to look at while you learn more about all they do. Check here for the daily schedule of events.

Farm animals, not your thing? Try shopping at one of the 18 shopping locations around the park showcasing everything from hot tubs to jewelry. Check out the Creative Arts Building and see an assortment of Lone Star arts, crafts, culinary creations, and performing art. Go to The State Fair Midway to ride more than 70 rides, including the iconic Texas Star® Ferris Wheel. The opportunities are really endless at the state fair. To buy tickets go here.
